About this experience
Bari is known as a place of worship for Catholic and Orthodox believers: the local basilica houses the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. We will pay special attention to visiting this shrine. But besides the spiritual heritage, the city is rich in a vibrant history and preserves the charm of Southern Italy – and on the tour, I will show that although Bari remains in the shadow of Rome or Venice, it is more than worthy of thorough study.
What to Expect
Basilica of Saint Nicholas
The most important part of the tour will be a visit to this temple. As a professional historian, theologian, and Orthodox priest, I will share unique information about the life and miracles of this amazing saint. You will hear an interesting story about the transfer of relics from the city of Myra to the city of Bari, reminiscent of a medieval thriller. And you will find out what the miraculous myrrh of St. Nicholas looks like.
We will also visit the main cathedral of Saint Sabina, where the relics of other Christian saints rest, and the 9th-century Cathedral of Our Lady. The most beautiful and ancient buildings in Bari are its temples.
Introductory Tour of Bari
We will walk along ancient streets and immerse ourselves in the historical milestones of Bari. Just imagine: this city was owned by Illyrians; it was part of Roman civilization; Byzantines left an indelible mark; there was a short but very important period of Arab rule; and there is also the legacy of the Vikings, Swabians, and the era of Aragonese rule.... We will have a lot to talk about!
Gastronomic Secrets of Southern Italy
Then we will immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of culinary traditions of the Apulia region. We will walk along a lively street, where local women will show how to make authentic Bari pasta 'orecchiette.' In addition, we will stroll through the 'unauthorized' part of the city wall and the main squares of the city.
