Ancient Land of Samtskhe-Javakheti: One of the Cradles of Georgian Culture
About this experience
Samtskhe-Javakheti is a special region where you can appreciate the diversity of our country's cultural heritage. You will walk through an impressive cave complex where an ancient city and monastery were located. Explore the reconstructed Rabati fortress and be transported back to the times of Ottoman conquests. Hear the legends of Tmogvi, an important stronghold in southern Georgia. And take a stroll in the picturesque Borjomi.
What to Expect
Borjomi Spa Town. You will walk through Borjomi Park, located in a river gorge and designated as a national reserve. Learn about the resort's history and its main attraction - healing mineral water.
Akhaltsikhe Fortress (Rabati). Next, we will visit an exceptionally photogenic citadel. Learn about the fortification history dating back to the 16th century when the city was captured by Ottoman troops and became the center of Akhaltsikhe Pashalik since 1628. The fortress area also houses a museum dedicated to the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829.
Tmogvi Fortress. In Akhaltsikhe Municipality, you will also visit the strategic fortress that served as an important military stronghold in southern Georgia. The guide will share interesting facts and legends related to Tmogvi.
Vardzia Cave Complex. The rock city and monastery is one of the most interesting attractions in our region. The complex was built in the 12-13th centuries. We will explore the caves, climb up to the observation platform, and descend through a secret exit.
At the end of the tour, we will gift you a bottle of Kakhetian wine made using traditional Georgian technology in a Qvevri.
