About this experience
Today Zemun is one of the districts of the Serbian capital. However, until the 20th century Belgrade and Zemun were in different countries. During the tour, you will figure out how this happened. I will be your guide into the world of Zemun - a journalist and political scientist. Therefore, in the intrigues of the 15th century, we will look for black PR, in the intricacies of the 19th century - the influence of interest groups, and in urban planning decisions - the authorities' desire to save the budget.
What to expect
- We will discuss why the term "Anti-Belgrade" best describes Zemun. We will figure out what made this town, previously part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, so different from the capital of Serbia.
- We will climb the Gardos Hill and debunk the myths about Count Dracula and his main opponent, who found his death in this place.
- We will talk about the Ottoman and Austrian periods in the history of Zemun. I will show you what details remind us of these eras: for example, the house "in balance" under Austria or the church on the foundation of a mosque.
- We will take a walk through the former quarantine zone. You will learn how people fought epidemics 200 years ago.
- I will tell you about the merchant who fought the revolution, and the journalist who wrote the first Serbian constitution.
- I will share stories about the underground and vampires, about places associated with the "white émigré", and about where the Jewish and German population of Zemun disappeared.
- At the end of the tour, we will meet the most famous and adorable residents of the district - swans. If you want to feed them (the swans definitely want that!), buy lettuce or cabbage leaves in advance.
Organizational details
- Upon your request, we can have breakfast at a bakery that has been operating for 100 years, or have coffee at one of the Zemun cafes. Breakfast and coffee are paid for separately.
- You can also climb the "Millenium" tower for a magnificent view of Belgrade and its surroundings. Cost - €2/person.
- During the walk, we will encounter several beautiful churches. Please note that in Serbia it is not customary for men to visit them in shorts.
