What to Expect
Dutch Charm - From Clogs to Gouda Cheese
Upon arrival at Zaanse Schans, we will first visit the 19th century grocery store, where the famous Albert Heijn store chain originated. In the workshop for making wooden shoes, you will learn why some Dutch people still wear clogs and even have the opportunity to buy a pair. Next, we will visit a local cheese dairy: get ready to taste over 30 types of cheese, sample local mustard, and uncover the secrets of the beloved Dutch Gouda cheese. Along the way, you can admire the authentic houses and barns from the outside and inside, which seem frozen in time.
Stroll Among the Windmills
After exploring the local crafts, you will walk through picturesque fields where goats and sheep peacefully graze and beautiful windmills rise, each with its own history and specific purpose. You will see windmills that use the wind's force to saw logs, grind raw materials for spices and paints, produce mustard and oil, pump water from the polders and canals. After feeding the swans and ducks, we will climb a lookout tower to admire Zaanse Schans from a bird's-eye view, and then you can visit one of the windmills and explore it from the inside!
Charm of Cozy Zaandijk
Next, we will cross the Zaan River by ferry or on foot and head to the town of Zaandijk, where you can observe local life, admire beautiful cottages, and if you wish, visit the 'Hoop' brewery or a cozy café.
