About this experience
Zaanse Schans is a real museum of Dutch folk culture in the open air. It used to be a developed industrial center where trade ships from all over the world arrived. Today, it is a small charming village attracting travelers with windmills, cozy atmosphere, and vivid traditional crafts. I will gladly be your guide to its magical world!
What awaits you
You will see the village's highlights: a spice mill, sawmills, and paint mill. Optionally, you can visit any of them and see how they work. You will also feed the farm animals, try natural hot chocolate in the sweet shop, and witness the stages of making 'Gouda' cheese in the cheese shop. You will see the wooden shoes 'clogs' and visit the place where the history of the huge supermarket chain Albert Heijn began. I will tell you:
- How a small suburb became an industrial center of the world
- What Peter the Great and Napoleon did at Zaanse Schans
- Why the Netherlands was called the 'country of 10,000 windmills'
- What they are really built for
- What the unique language of millers is based on
And much more!
