About this experience
Sirmione is one of the most remarkable cities on Lake Garda. It has everything for a wonderful walk: a medieval castle, ancient villas, ancient Roman ruins, fairytale views of the lake, and a cozy atmosphere. I will show you the main attractions of Sirmione, tell you about the first settlements on this land, and about local modern life.
What to Expect
Castles, Churches, Villas, and More
You will explore the majestic medieval Scaliger Castle. I will tell you about the powerful Veronese lords dynasty associated with it and reveal why the symbol of Venice - the winged lion - is depicted at the entrance to the castle. In addition, we will visit the miniature 13th-century Church of St. Anne: admire the image of Madonna on stone and the baroque-style sculpted ceiling. I will also show you the mansion of the opera diva Maria Callas and the luxurious Cortine Villa.
Sirmione Yesterday and Today
On the Mavino hill, you can touch the cool uneven walls of the 5th-century Church of St. Peter and admire the recently restored frescoes. In the northern part of the city, I will show you the ruins of the ancient Roman Grottoes of Catullus and the building of the local archaeological museum: you will see them from the outside and, if desired, visit on your own after the tour. We will also talk about modern life in Sirmione: you will learn about local beaches, thermal springs, gastronomic specialties, and the most popular aperitifs.
