About this experience
The surroundings of Lake Garda in the Lombardy region are a glittering gem in the crown of Italy. Here you can see Roman villas and admire mighty medieval castles. We will start our walk in the municipality of Desenzano del Garda and explore its main treasures. Then we will visit the town of Sirmione on the lakeside - a haven for the poet Catullus and the opera singer Maria Callas.
What to Expect
Picturesque Desenzano del Garda
- We will visit the Roman villa - a monument of ancient architecture from the 4th century. We will explore its mosaics and exhibition dedicated to the architectural heritage of the Roman Empire.
- We will see the city's main cathedral with the masterpiece of the late Renaissance - Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's "The Last Supper"
- We will walk to the top of the hill to the medieval castle of Desenzano and enjoy the picturesque views from there
Colorful Sirmione
- We will head to the town's landmark - the mighty Scaliger Castle, built on the water. We will climb to the viewing platform with luxurious views of the Alpine foothills and the mirror surface of Lake Garda.
- We will walk to the villa of the divine Maria Callas and talk about her difficult fate
- We will visit the archaeological complex Grotto Catullus - ruins of a Roman villa dating back to the 1st century AD. We will discuss the connection the ancient Roman poet Catullus had to this place.
Organizational Details
The distance between Desenzano del Garda and Sirmione is about 6 km. During the navigation period on the lake, from April to October, we will move between them by boat. In winter, we will use my car for transportation.
