What to Expect
Special mood and spirit of Lisbon
Wandering through the streets of the Old Town and peeking into authentic courtyards, where laundry still hangs behind the windows, and locals chat with neighbors on the porch about this and that, I will tell you about the everyday life of native Lisboans and what defines their mentality. You will hear about the birth of the soulful and unique music fado, the connection of Portugal with the tea traditions of Britain. You will see the oldest and still functioning mechanical laundry. On a beautiful viewing platform, you will try one of the best coffees in the capital, and a little later in one of the cozy cafes - the traditional cherry liqueur ginja.
A look beyond the horizon of history
I will help you imagine the long chain of years that the city has traversed from the 1st century to our days. In the oldest district of Lisbon - Mouraria - you will discover impressive views of the city from Graça viewpoint and learn about the birth of the future capital. On your way, there will be the ancient Roman theater and the route of the crusaders who liberated the city. At Commerce Square, we will talk about the era of the empire's peak, the Age of Discovery, and the legendary explorers - Vasco da Gama and Henry the Navigator. About the loss of imperial grandeur, the devastating earthquake, and urban planning reshuffles. You will also look at the Tagus River from the viewpoint of Portas do Sol and discover a secret place where the history of Portugal is depicted in the form of graffiti.
Elegant Chiado and pastel de Belém
If desired, after briefly visiting the famous Timeout market, you will stroll through one of the most symbolic and elegant neighborhoods of Lisbon. Here I will tell you about the iconic events and traditional activities that were held in ancient times on Rossio square. Near the central monument to the king of Portugal and emperor of Brazil, Pedro IV, you will learn what this ruler was remembered for in both countries. And to conclude, you will taste traditional green wine and try the famous Portuguese sweet pastel de Belém, the origin of which we will discuss separately.
