About this experience
In just two hours of walking through the old town of Kranj, you will learn more about Slovenia than if you traveled around the country for a couple of days! On my tour, you will delve into the history of the city and Slovenian culture, discover colorful courtyards and favorite cafes of the locals, enjoy Alpine panoramas from the viewpoints, taste local dishes, and feel the idyll of a small town. This route is filled with all my love for Slovenia and the unique town of Kranj, which I want to share with you.
What to expect
Charm of the historic center
Upon the streets of old Kranj, you will immerse yourself in the unhurried flow of city life, where all residents know each other and preserve their traditions. You will walk through the main square of Kranj, see the town hall and the Gothic church. I will take you to the favorite spots of the locals - secluded courtyards with arcades and hidden cafes overlooking the city and mountains. You will understand why Kranj is considered the cultural capital of the country and learn about the life and work of the "Slovenian Pushkin" - France Prešeren, who introduced the beauty of the Slovenian language to the world. However, I must warn you: do not expect historical chronicles and dates from me, but I will tell you many urban stories and help you feel the special atmosphere of Kranj.
Capital of the Slovenian Alps
During the walk, you will see the city and its surroundings from a bird's-eye view, descend briefly into the canyon of the Kokra River, where you will feel the impregnability of Kranj, which has grown on a rock. And then, through the old center, we will reach the viewpoint located at the site of one of the seven defensive towers: here you will learn about the natural, archaeological, and historical features of the city.
Culinary Kranj
We will pay special attention to local delicacies and cafes: each restaurant in the old center (of which there are just over 20) can boast of its own history and cozy atmosphere. I will tell you why some of them are empty most of the time, while others are filled with almost the entire city. I will share the secret of how to learn all of Slovenia by regions through desserts. And, of course, you will taste the most delicious Kranj sausage - and at the same time learn an interesting story about why the sausages are called Kranj sausages and how it is related to the city.
Secret ingredient
Life in Slovenia may seem too calm to you, and life in Kranj even more so, so I will try to surprise you with a surprise prepared for the end of our walk. What it will be - remains a secret for now: it depends on the time of day we will be strolling through the city, as well as on your preferences, which I will understand during our acquaintance.
Organizational details
- If you live in Kranj, we will meet at your hotel or in the city center. If you are coming from another city, I will definitely advise you on how to get there and where it is best to park.
- If you have any special requests (for example, if you want to dedicate more time to culture or beer tasting), then tell me about it before the tour: I will definitely include it in our walk.
- Be sure to have your passport with you (not only in Kranj, but throughout the country, as the fines for this are significant).
- A glass of wine or a non-alcoholic drink is included in the tour. Everything else can be purchased along the way according to your wishes. We can also complement the tour with a wine or craft beer tasting (on average about 15 euros for 3-4 varieties).
