About this experience
The Seine is the 'skeleton' of the city, its foundation. Following the river line, you will walk through the most beautiful and iconic places of Paris. I will guide you through the epochs, show you the Paris of kings and migrants, Romans and impressionists. We will talk about Paris's postcards, its dark side of history and blend in with typical city dwellers - have a picnic on the banks of the Seine or in the Tuileries park.
What to Expect
The illogical capital and its landmarks
You will see the heart of Paris - the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, and I will tell you what the Louvre, the world's largest museum, used to be before, and where the kings' residence was located before it. Paris is much older than many think, and after acquainting you with its origins, I will lead you to the most beautiful buildings of the neoclassical period and the age of industrialization. And, as the 'icing on the cake,' our walk will be crowned by the most recognizable symbol in the world - the Eiffel Tower! And along the way, we will discuss how Paris managed to reclaim the status of the capital from more 'legitimate' contenders for this role and what religion has to do with it.
Paris as a myth, or debunking legends
As a developed European city, Paris has always attracted not only residents of France but also foreigners who flocked to the capital in huge numbers. I will touch on issues that are common to Parisians but unexpected for romantics: migrants, drugs, sanitary conditions - a city where life is actively boiling may not always correspond to the idealized image of it, but that doesn't make it worse. You will learn how streets were lit and sewers were rebuilt under French kings, where the gallows were and public executions took place, learn a couple of dark legends, and see the heart of Paris in a different light.
Segments of free Parisian life: then, now, always
Walking along the Seine, you will observe not only the city itself but also its inhabitants, and along the way, we will recall the Parisians of past centuries. What is the 'Golden Age' of Paris, when jazz takes off here, why all the Impressionists flock here? You will notice a cafe where 'Ulysses' was printed, learn who its owner was, and begin to better understand who true Parisians are. And to solidify this understanding, we (if you wish) will peek into a secret store, buy inexpensive wine and cheese, and have a small picnic with a view of the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre.
