About this experience
Don't plan anything for Sunday! On this day, the iconic flea market opens its doors, existing in Madrid since the 16th century. We will rush there to find unique antiques and discover the secret hideout of local artists. And then we will find out why Plaza Mayor is painted in burgundy, which street the stars of old Hollywood walked on, and where delicious treats for the royal court were baked.
What to Expect
- Learn how the iconic El Rastro market appeared in Madrid, why the authorities wanted to destroy it in the 1980s, and how the citizens protected this integral part of the capital.
- Visit secret shops where you can purchase unusual antiques and unique souvenirs during the tour.
- See the most interesting artifacts, such as those taken from the main city cemetery named after Saint Isidro. You will be happily explained the origin of any curious item found in the shop.
- Explore a secret art space with an exhibition of local talents, known only to us and our guests. This will be our little secret :) Artworks can be purchased or ordered from anywhere in the world.
- We will walk through the medieval part of Madrid and explore the main square - Plaza Mayor. You will learn why it is painted burgundy, who had the right to live here in the 16-18th centuries, and where delicacies for the royal court were baked.
- At the San Miguel Market, we will indulge in the best local delicacies. You will understand what the market used to be and how it has transformed into a popular food court. Admire antique engravings and vintage photos.
- We will end the walk on the avenue where the stars of golden Hollywood of the early 20th century enjoyed strolling. You will learn who and why invited American architects to build the avenue and see authentic bars that are over 100 years old.
