Venice of Brodsky

What to expect

We will walk the paths of Brodsky, remembering his essay 'The Waterfront of Incurables' and the verses dedicated to his beloved city. We will try to guess the places described in those that we will encounter along the way. And we will explore the famous city locations from the perspective of their connection with the poet's life.

You will see:

• Pensione Accademia, mentioned in the poem 'Lagoon' - the poet loved to stay here.
• The same 'Waterfront of Incurables' and Brodsky's favorite places nearby.
• Palazzo Marcello, belonging to a member of one of the most esteemed Venetian families. Brodsky stayed here during his last visits to Venice.
• Piazza San Marco and the oldest café in the world 'Florian', where the poet enjoyed coffee with friends who came to visit him.
• The church where Antonio Vivaldi was baptized, and the district behind the Arsenal - lesser-known places to tourists with many old grocery shops and typical trattorias.
• If desired, we can visit the famous 'Island of the Dead' - San Michele Cemetery, where the poet is laid to rest (as well as Peter Vail, Igor Stravinsky, and Sergei Diaghilev). You will learn the story of Joseph Brodsky's funeral and the related incident, which can be called 'the irony of fate'.

• Duration of the walk without visiting the cemetery is 1 hour 40 minutes, with a visit - 3 hours (including travel time)
• The excursion is suitable for adults and children from 10 years old

• Visit to the San Michele island cemetery - 30 euros
• Vaporetto public transport ticket to San Michele - 9.50 euros/person one way. No discounts are available for children. You can also purchase a 24-hour ticket for 25 euros/person.
