With me, you will discover much more about New York City than during a typical sightseeing tour. Dive into the history of jazz, explore the center of Black culture, visit the African market, see the oldest building in Manhattan, and learn about the impact of the Great Migration on Harlem.
What to Expect
Our tour will start in Morningside Heights, known as the 'academic acropolis' of New York City:
- We will stop at Columbia University - one of the Ivy League institutions.
- Visit two iconic churches in New York City: the Cathedral of St. John the Divine - a church shrouded in mystery and interesting stories, and Riverside Church - the tallest church in the USA.
- Stroll through Morningside Park and Sakura Park. Plants were brought here directly from Japan!
As we walk through Harlem, we will immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties:
- Discuss the evolution of jazz. Hear stories about legends like Billie Holiday, Scott Joplin, and Eubie Blake.
- Appreciate the street art and numerous murals that celebrate the rich cultural history and diversity of the neighborhood.
- Talk about the Great Migration, Harlem Renaissance, and the African-American experience that transformed Harlem into a vibrant and dynamic community.
- Visit iconic locations such as the Abyssinian Baptist Church, the Apollo Theater, the Harlem Walk of Fame, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
- Explore the historic streets of Astor Row and Strivers Row. Enjoy the beautiful architecture and wide boulevards of Harlem.
- Stop by the African Market, where you can purchase authentic souvenirs if desired.
In Hamilton Heights, we will visit the final home of Alexander Hamilton - the founding father of American finance. In Washington Heights, we will see the oldest building in Manhattan, where George Washington once stayed. Finally, we will end our journey on the Hudson River shore, transporting ourselves to medieval times at the museum in The Cloisters.
Logistical Details
- The tour is a guided walking experience. We will travel in a comfortable Ford Flex vehicle.
- No mandatory additional expenses are required
