About this experience
For those who are just starting to explore or continue to get acquainted with Unusual Rome, I invite you to take a walk through two special districts of the city - the authentic Garbatella, resembling something between a country village and Spanish quarters in Naples, and the informal industrial Ostiense, where old factory and power plant buildings coexist with modern art.
Program
Garbatella is a district where the experienced can discover residential buildings from the 1920s-30s and learn what social housing looked like in Rome at that time and what 'Roman baroquettos' are. All curious visitors can find in Garbatella what they so lack in the historical center - the absence of tourists, huge, colorful, open inner courtyards, where there is a feeling that the whole district 'cleaned up just for our arrival'. The trattorias and bars of Garbatella are famous among Romans, and only there can you taste delightful pasta, meat, and homemade desserts. For those who understand Italian and want to hear the speech of true Romans, Garbatella and the speech of local residents are an encyclopedia and a treasure trove of real romanesco. Moreover, many films were shot in Garbatella - after all, this district is itself a ready-made set, already waiting for its director or photographer.
Due to the gloomy appearance of the Ostiense district, local authorities decided to reconsider their view of it and organized the international street art festival 'Outdoor' here. Thus, the walls and facades of buildings became canvases for modern street artists, and now this place resembles an open-air museum. We will see the works of the amazing artist Blu, who is listed by 'The Observer' as one of the top ten most famous street artists in the world. He honored the Ostiense district with three graffiti, completely covering the facades of buildings, and once, while walking, I managed to see him on a ladder, updating his graffiti on the facade of the former RAF barracks, occupied by immigrants.
You can also try to guess the characters depicted on the 'Wall of Fame' by JB ROCK, see the works of Lex&Sten, working in the stencil genre, and also enjoy the graffiti of Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione, who has a scandalous reputation due to his '1000 Shadows' series. In Rome, he adorned a wall with a stunning painting, stylistically resembling something between surrealism, symbolism, and art nouveau.
Additionally, for those who wish to stay in Garbatella for lunch or an aperitif - I will gladly show you a chic trattoria with authentic Roman home cooking!
