About this experience
Ordinary Romans don't live on Piazza Venezia. They don't buy cheeses at Campo de' Fiori. They don't stop at a bar near the Pantheon on their way to work, and they don't sit on the Spanish Steps in the evenings. I will introduce you to the real life of the Eternal City, with the weekdays and customs of its citizens. We will take a walk in the Trieste district, where the luxury of the Coppede quarter coexists with the simplicity of Rome's residential areas.
What to expect
Immerse in the weekdays of Romans
My goal on this stroll is to show you how Rome really lives today. You will see elegant palaces of expensive neighborhoods and middle-class residential areas. Walking along green streets without tourists, you will meet ordinary citizens going to the supermarket and church, to the flower kiosk and pizzeria. I will share my observations about the life of Romans and their traditions. And of course, we will talk about how the almost three-thousand-year history of Rome is reflected in the realities of today.
Off the beaten paths
The walk will start at a post office built during Mussolini's time. Roman architecture of the 20th century, in one way or another, reminds of the dictator: the traces of Il Duce, as his followers called him, are preserved in the city park. I will reveal the history of Villa Torlonia - once the residence of a wealthy family, and today a favorite walking place for Romans, where we will also visit.
The route will pass near the ancient Roman university. You will hear who studied there in the 14th century and how popular higher education is among Italians today. I will tell you how easy it is for a foreigner to enroll in Italian universities and share my own experience.
Next, you will explore the Trieste district, where Romans with above-average incomes live. This Rome is slightly refined and solemn. We will stroll through the art nouveau-style quarter designed by architect Gino Coppede. This is the Rome you didn't expect! Fairy and Spider houses, veiled greetings from Venice and Florence - here you will appreciate all the charm and elegance of last century's architecture.
I will gladly recommend where to have lunch and where you can simply sit with a glass of wine, as well as what Roman dishes are worth trying at the local market.

Ordinary Romans do not live on the square of Venice... This phrase marked the beginning of my acquaintance with the amazing non-traditional excursion 'Rome without tourists' and its ideological inspirer Svetlana. It must be said that, despite the rain and the number of participants being just me, th...
