About this experience
Luoyang and its surroundings are full of amazing places that will help you delve into China's history and the intricacies of Buddhism. You will visit the legendary Shaolin Monastery and the mysterious Pagoda Forest, attend a martial arts show by the best masters of wushu, explore the first Buddhist temple in China, and admire unique artifacts and the nature of these places.
What to Expect
First Day
In Luoyang, on the first day of the tour, you will visit the Shaolin Monastery, founded over a thousand years ago during the Tang dynasty. Today, it is China's main national Buddhist monastery. Shaolin is the birthplace of the famous martial art of the same name and the Chan school of Chinese Buddhism. Here, you will witness performances by the best wushu masters. The monastery is located opposite Mount Wuru, surrounded by sharp mountains and lush vegetation. Its name comes from “shao” - the Shao Shi mountain, and “lin” means “forest”. The monastery's architecture is remarkably diverse as it has been rebuilt multiple times. You will stroll around the area and even visit the local memorial cemetery - the Talin Pagoda Forest.
Second Day
The second day of the tour starts with a trip to the Longmen Grottoes. These grottoes are Luoyang's main attraction, created following the Indian tradition of carving entire complexes of cave temples into cliffs (it was believed to improve karma and lead to better rebirth in the next life). This custom spread to China after the arrival of Buddhism. You will learn how the history of China and the events of the time of Emperor Taoba Tao influenced the development of this trend, understand the concept of “bodhisattva”, and see huge stone Buddhas. Later, you will visit the Baimasi Temple, or the White Horse Temple, revered in China as the cradle of Buddhism and the “Home of the Founder”. You will hear the remarkable history of this place, learn about the “42 Chapter Sutra”, and see many unique Buddhist artifacts.
