About this experience
In the heart of the magical Bukhara, you will get acquainted with the main mosques, madrasahs, and mausoleums of the Sacred City, hear legends about Genghis Khan and St. Job. You will also learn the history of the ancient impregnable citadel Ark and explore the tallest minaret Kalyan, which, like a beacon, guided trade caravans and pilgrims heading to Bukhara.
What to Expect
The Majestic Lyab-i Hauz Complex
On one of the central squares of Bukhara, you will discover the architectural ensemble of the 16-17th centuries, in the middle of which there is a wonderful reservoir. I will tell you about the origin of its name, ancient Trade Domes, their vibrant life in the Middle Ages, and the goods traditionally sold here. Here you will see classic oriental chaikhanas, the culture of which will have a separate story.
Kalyan Minaret - One of the Symbols of the Old City
Near one of the tallest buildings in Bukhara, you will learn about the role this ancient 47-meter structure played, besides being a place for the call to prayer for Muslims. You will also hear the legend of Genghis Khan's famous bow.
Samanid Mausoleum - Architectural Gem of Central Asia
Shining under the bright Bukhara sun, it embodies the onset of a new era in the development of Central Asian culture after the Arab conquests. You will admire the intricate patterns carved on the walls of the 9th-century mausoleum and note the unusual feature that makes the building look different at different times of the day.
Chashma Ayub Mausoleum - Source of St. Job
In the heart of Bukhara, you will explore another monument of religious architecture, including a mausoleum and a holy spring. I will tell you about St. Job (the biblical prophet Job) and the ancient legend according to which a source with healing water appeared here. People still believe it has magical power and come here to make a wish. You will also be able to connect with this tradition.
Other Remarkable Monuments of Old Bukhara
The program also includes the enigmatic Magoki-Attori Mosque dating back to Zoroastrianism; the main Friday mosque Kalyan and the Bolo-Hauz Mosque, which used to be the main cathedral mosque of the city, where the emir of Bukhara prayed along with thousands of Muslims. Near the madrasahs of Chor-Minor, Miri-Arab, Ulugh Beg, and Abdulaziz-khan, we will discuss the iconic religious-enlightening institutions. Additionally, you will hear the history of the impregnable fortress Ark - the oldest archaeological monument in Bukhara.
