What to Expect
Bukhara through the Centuries
You will walk through the Old Center and fully experience the spirit of the Middle Ages. You will learn how cities and states were formed in our amazing region, how trade developed, and what role the Great Silk Road played in the region's development. You will see skilled craftsmen on the ancient streets and learn how they manage to create true works of art using ancient technologies. I will help you feel the unique atmosphere of the old part of the city and show you a huge number of preserved monuments of Central Asian architecture. So, the program includes:
- Labi-Hauz Ensemble - one of the main squares of the ancient city, in the center of which there is a wonderful reservoir called Nadir-Begi. I will tell you how the attitude towards this architectural complex has changed throughout history.
- Trading Domes - you will see domes for exchange, headgear, and jewelers. Together we will examine their stone vaults and preserved mosaics.
- Kosh-Madrasah Complex, consisting of two educational institutions from the 15th and 17th centuries. I will explain the features of their architecture and why Kosh-Madrasah is an outstanding work of Central Asian architecture.
- Poi-Kalyan - you will explore the ancient complex, consisting of a 12th-century minaret, the largest mosque, and madrasa.
- Ark Fortress - you will be impressed by the impregnable abode of all rulers of Bukhara, starting from the 4th century BCE. I will tell you the history and legends of this 'inner city'.
- Samanid Mausoleum - a monument of stunning beauty, built of burnt brick in the 9th century.
