About this experience
After a tour of Lübeck, you can visit its suburb - Travemünde, located just 20 km from the center of Lübeck. During the tour of Travemünde, you will get acquainted with the history of the city and its present life, feel not only the 'aristocratic spirit' of the resort, but also the preserved charm of the cozy fishing village.
In the early 12th century, a small fishing village for fishermen and sailors emerged at the mouth of the Trave River into the Baltic Sea. In 1187, Count Adolf III of Schauenburg built a fortress here to protect against the attacks of Slavs and Vikings. In the 19th century, the rapid growth of resorts on the Baltic Sea began. Travemünde with its 4.5 km long sandy beach became an ideal place for relaxation. Sanatoriums, hotels, a casino, a promenade were built here, and life was in full swing.
Every day steamboats arrived here from Copenhagen, Riga, St. Petersburg, and other cities. Especially important was the connection with Imperial Russia for the resort. Many wealthy Russians came here, happily spending their money in Travemünde. N. Gogol lived and received treatment here, while I. Turgenev and F. Dostoevsky often played at the city's casino.
After a stroll, you can, of course, swim in the sea (in summer) and have lunch at one of the many fish restaurants.
