About this experience
A trip to the outskirts of Berlin is designed as a journey into the world of 20th-century spy stories. You will visit the legendary Glienicke Bridge, where intelligence services exchanged agents; the village of Klein Glienicke, a 'island' of the GDR in West Berlin; learn about the history of a Prussian prince who was never destined to become king and his influence on the appearance of today's Berlin suburb. The changing landscapes and architectural styles will create the impression that you are traveling from Italy through Switzerland to England.
- The route will start at the border between Potsdam and Berlin. It was here on the Glienicke Bridge that exchanges of spies took place between Soviet and American intelligence services during the Cold War. From here, you will have a magnificent view of the River Havel and the Prussian palaces of Glienicke and Babelsberg.
- We will continue our walk in the picturesque village of Klein Glienicke. In the 19th century, a Prussian prince built a 'little Switzerland' here, and in the 20th century, the village turned into an enclave of the GDR. Only a small pedestrian bridge connected it to East Berlin. The existence of the village was kept secret by the GDR authorities, even on official maps of East Germany, Klein Glienicke was absent. And after the wall was built, villagers could only return home with special permits. I will tell you why this village was considered a high-security zone and how locals lived among agents and informants during the Cold War era.
- Then we will 'spy' on the former American sector of Berlin. You will see the remnants of the Berlin Tunnel - the most expensive special operation of the Allies in the 1950s under the code name 'Operation Gold' for tapping the communication lines between the USSR and the GDR. I will tell you how American and British intelligence planned the tunnel under the watchful eye of a double KGB agent. The program also includes visits to secret sites on the first satellite map of Berlin and much more!
