About this experience
Traveling through the Prokletije mountain range, you will discover off-the-beaten-path corners of this region. You will ascend to the summit and overlook the Grla Sokolovo gorge from a bird's eye view. You will see authentic villages, get to know the way of life of the Montenegrins, and try local cuisine in a unique restaurant right in the middle of a pasture.
What to Expect
Mountain panoramas, villages, and mountain dwellers' customs
The Prokletije mountain range is known as the Northern Albanian Alps. It is one of the most inaccessible mountain massifs, still not fully explored. Seemingly unfriendly, the Prokletije mountains guard landscapes of astonishing beauty for their conquerors.
Our path leads through a picturesque mountain road. We will pass through the capital of Montenegro - Podgorica. You will see old villages - I will tell you about the life of local mountain dwellers and their activities, explain why the Albanians living in these places accepted Catholicism. You will hear about the exploits of Montenegrin hajduks, who for centuries led a liberation struggle, fighting the Ottomans.
Ascent to the summits
Our goal is a 2.5-kilometer hike to the Grla Sokolovo gorge. Along the way, you may encounter huge strawberry and blackberry patches - we will take a break to pick ripe berries. The view from the top is breathtaking: you will find yourself above the mountains, eagles soaring nearby, and the Albanian village of Tamara visible far below.
Lunch on the pasture
On the way back, we will take a different road to see new landscapes and meet grazing herds of horses and sheep. I will show you the no less majestic canyon of the Cievna River and the Montenegrin “alpine meadows”. And for lunch, we will stop at an interesting authentic restaurant with simple village food. It is located right on the summer pasture: sheep cheese and tomatoes, prosciutto, potatoes with kaymak, homemade bread with milk, fruits, local wine, and rakia will complement the trip with gastronomic experiences.
