About this experience
To immerse yourself in the atmosphere of medieval Ireland, there is no need to go far from Dublin. This journey will introduce you to the castles of Malahide, Swords, and Howth, located in the suburbs of the capital. You will gain a complete understanding of the history of Ireland, its culture, ancient legends, and fortification architecture. Enjoy incredible sea views, explore interiors that are centuries old, and, if you're lucky, encounter a real ghost!
What to Expect
Malahide Castle Ghosts
The first castle on our itinerary is Malahide, a 12th-century castle known for its well-preserved interior and ancient furniture dating back centuries. Walk through the castle rooms, once owned by the Talbot family, learn about Oliver Cromwell's connection to the place, who Miles Corbett was, and how many ghosts inhabit Malahide, according to legends. And of course, I will tell you on which bright pages of Irish history the castle left its mark over its 800 years of existence.
Glorious History of Medieval Swords
If you wish to see a typical medieval castle with a fortress wall and towers, all of this can be found in Swords Castle (also known as the Castle of Swords). The monastery founded here in the 6th century experienced Viking invaders coming from Dublin and after 300 years belonged to the Bishops of Dublin, laying the foundation for Swords Castle. You will discover the heritage of Irish Medieval times, learn why the local county is called Fingal, and examine the architecture of Swords Castle, which has survived to this day in the form of three towers, structures with entrance gates, a chapel, and two fortress walls.
Wonderful Landscapes of Howth Castle
Next, we will head to the Howth Peninsula, where the castle of the same name, owned by the Lawrence dynasty, is located. This is one of the few castles in Ireland where descendants of its founders still reside. You will hear the fascinating but true story associated with the castle, the main character of which is the leader of the Irish pirates Grace O'Malley. Then enjoy the magical views from the outskirts of Howth Castle: you will see the most beautiful sea landscapes, the entire coastline of Dublin Bay, and the island of "Ireland's Eye".
Irish Fortified Castles
Martello fortification castles will transport you back to the time of Napoleonic wars: it was in the early 19th century that dozens of fortified castles were built by English and Irish to protect against possible attacks. Along the Dublin coastline, you will explore several of these fort castles, including the islands of "Ireland's Eye" and "Lambay". On the way back, we will stop at the ancient Clontarf Castle, where a 4-star hotel is now located.
