About this experience
Sculptures and sculptural compositions, sometimes very unexpected and even eccentric, are organically woven into the look of the Swedish capital. While strolling through the Old Town, the Island of Knights, the Royal Island, the business City, the aristocratic Eastern district, and the Ship Island, you will see the most interesting and original street sculptures. And I will tell you about their creation, symbolism, and life outside museums.
What to Expect
The emergence of urban sculpture is usually prepared by the environment, place, time, so that it harmoniously fits into the space, becomes its decoration, and continues the architecture. As it is known, urban sculpture, arising in the right place and time, is capable of transforming the most ordinary space or enhancing existing merits and setting accents in the rich historical center.
Stockholm is known and acclaimed for its urban sculpture of various genres, styles, and sizes, which blend with each other and with the surrounding architecture. Urban sculpture creates or emphasizes the uniqueness and singularity of each specific place, awakening imagination and emotions. Through it, the connection between architecture and visual art, which aesthetically enhances space, appealing to feelings and reflection simultaneously, brings diversity and harmony so necessary for humanity.
The sculptures in Stockholm are extraordinarily original and expressive, although sometimes they may surprise fans of realism. Sometimes they seem unnaturally elongated, proportions are distorted, and one could say that such things do not happen in real life. But if you look closer, you will see that they are full of charm and deep life meaning.
In Stockholm, you can see not only individual sculptures but also entire sculptural compositions. Among urban architecture, they constantly change depending on the lighting and weather, as if in a natural rotation of the city. Sculptures sometimes live here a completely different life, different from what they would have in galleries or museums.
We will start our walk in the Old Town (Gamla Stan), stroll through its narrow streets, and get acquainted with its sculptural residents. Then we will move to Knights Island (Riddarholmen) and see how sculptures have organically taken their places on this island. By crossing the bridge to the Town Hall, we will visit the Royal Island (Kungsholmen) to discover the presence of original sculptures there. Next is the business district City (Norrmalm), where we will find that there is also a place for sculptures among the office buildings. The aristocratic Eastern district (Ostermalm) has not been left without original solutions with the presence of sculptures. And our sculpture walk will end on the Ship Island (Skeppsholmen), where the most eccentric sculptures await us.
