You will see all the iconic places of the Bulgarian capital, immerse yourself in its centuries-old history, and learn about the civilizations that simultaneously destroyed and built Sofia. You will also wash with living water and make a wish at the statue of Saint Seraphim.
What to expect
Roman and Medieval Sofia
In the center of Sofia, you will explore the famous district of the Roman era, Serdika, examine the ruins of the second largest arena in Europe after the Colosseum, and try the hot mineral water. Then you will dive into the Middle Ages - I will tell you about the Eastern Roman Empire, known as Byzantium, and its huge influence on the formation of the Bulgarian state. You will hear about Christianity, the Slavic alphabet, and the differences between Orthodox and Catholic religions. You will also visit the main temples of the city: St. Resurrection, St. Sophia, St. Alexander Nevsky, and the Russian Church.
From the Ottoman period to the present day
After a short break in a cozy bistro, where you will taste the famous Turkish soup, I will tell you about the Ottoman period in Bulgaria and the country's liberation in 1878. You will see the monument to King Liberator, Stefan Stambolov, and learn about the roles played by Russia, the USA, and the UK in Bulgarian history. Next, I will show you the former royal palace, the Vazov National Theatre, and the house of Baron von Gendovich. The tour will end in the park of the Palace of Culture, where you will see the memorial to the victims of communism and a piece of the Berlin Wall. You will hear about the communist period in Bulgarian history and its modern perspectives.
