About this experience
I invite you to explore ancient Plovdiv together, a contemporary of Troy. You will walk through streets that remember Romans and Thracians, examine the ancient theater, medieval buildings, and cozy merchant houses of the 19th century. And in the Ethnographic Museum, you will learn the most interesting facts about Bulgarian traditions, crafts, and way of life.
What to expect
A journey through the ages of Plovdiv Just a hundred kilometers from Sofia, you will encounter Plovdiv - a contemporary of Troy and a city older than Athens, Rome, and Constantinople. Stories hide behind every corner of Plovdiv: Roman and Byzantine, Ottoman and Slavic. During the walk, we will unravel this tangle of cultures and eras, understand why artists, poets, and performers are drawn to Plovdiv, and visit the city's iconic monuments - from the Turkish mosque of Djumaya to the Orthodox Church of St. Marina. In the Ethnographic Museum of Plovdiv, you will touch upon Bulgarian traditions - explore national costumes, jewelry, musical instruments, household items, and church utensils, as well as get acquainted with Bulgarian folk crafts - from weaving to winemaking.
Open-air architectural reserve In Plovdiv, over 200 architectural landmarks have been preserved - and most of them can be found in the open-air museum 'Old Plovdiv'. A walk through this historic district will be a journey through time. You will see ancient Roman buildings standing side by side with ruins of Turkish mosques, fortresses of Thracians, wooden mansions from the Middle Ages, and cozy merchant houses from the 19th century in the style of the National Revival with projecting balconies. Special attention will be paid to the ancient Roman heritage: you will see the excellently preserved antique theater and the Roman stadium, built following the model of the famous Delphic stadium.
After the excursion, upon your request, we can visit a winery near Plovdiv to taste Bulgarian wines (by prior arrangement).
