About this experience
I invite you to explore ancient Plovdiv together, a contemporary of Troy. You will walk through streets that remember Romans and Thracians, admire the ancient theater, medieval buildings, and cozy merchant houses from the 19th century. And in the Ethnographic Museum, you will learn all about Bulgarian traditions, crafts, and daily life.
What to expect
A journey through the epochs of Plovdiv
In just a hundred kilometers from Sofia, you will encounter Plovdiv - a contemporary of Troy and a city older than Athens, Rome, and Constantinople. Behind every corner of Plovdiv, stories are hidden: Roman and Byzantine, Ottoman and Slavic. During the walk, we will unravel this tangle of cultures and epochs, understand why artists, poets, and performers are drawn to Plovdiv, and explore the city's iconic monuments - from the Turkish mosque Djumaya to the Orthodox church of St. Marina. In the Ethnographic Museum of Plovdiv, you will touch Bulgarian traditions - see national costumes, jewelry, musical instruments, household items, church utensils, and get acquainted with Bulgarian folk crafts - from weaving to winemaking.
Architectural open-air museum
In Plovdiv, more than 200 architectural monuments are preserved - and most of them can be found in the open-air museum "Old Plovdiv". A walk through this historic district will be a journey through time. You will see ancient Roman buildings standing side by side with ruins of Turkish mosques, fortresses of Thracians, wooden mansions from the Middle Ages, and cozy merchant houses from the 19th century in the National Revival style with protruding balconies. We will pay special attention to the ancient Roman heritage: you will see the excellently preserved ancient theater and the Roman stadium, built following the model of the famous Delphic stadium.
And after the excursion, if you wish, we can visit a winery near Plovdiv to taste Bulgarian wines.
