You will visit the beautiful white St. George Church, the temple of the Karageorgevich dynasty. Explore the incredible mosaic that adorns almost the entire interior of the cathedral. I will tell you about the founder of the dynasty, George Petrovich, who instilled fear in the Turks and led the Serbs in the first uprising against the Ottoman yoke. And about his grandson, King Peter I, who built this temple to perpetuate the dynasty and the memory of his great grandfather. You will hear the unusual story of creating a crown from a cannon, see family relics derived from ceremonial portraits, and a telegram marking the beginning of a great war. You will also discover that the last royal dynasty of Serbia is not just historical facts but living people who maintain their social media accounts and can be met at social events.
Russian Influence in the Balkans
I will tell you about Nikola Krasnov, the chief state architect of King Alexander and former imperial architect of Russia. To conclude the trip, you will visit the largest modern winery in the region. Learn about the history of private winemakers and how they revived the winemaking traditions of the Shumadia region in the turbulent '90s. We will walk through the wine cellars, see how champagne is produced using classic technology, and meet an ancient god of winemaking guarding this family's wine archive.
