What to Expect
Royal Dynasty of Serbia
You will visit the beautiful white St. George Church, the temple of the Karageorgevich dynasty. Explore the incredible mosaic that adorns almost the entire interior of the cathedral. I will tell you about the founder of the dynasty, George Petrovich, who instilled fear in the Turks and led the Serbs in the first uprising against the Ottoman yoke. And about his grandson, King Peter I, who built this temple to perpetuate the dynasty and the memory of his great grandfather. You will hear the unusual story of creating a crown from a cannon, see family relics derived from ceremonial portraits, and a telegram marking the beginning of a great war. You will also discover that the last royal dynasty of Serbia is not just historical facts but living people who maintain their social media accounts and can be met at social events.
Russian Influence in the Balkans
I will tell you about Nikola Krasnov, the chief state architect of King Alexander and former imperial architect of Russia. It was under his guidance that the interior decoration of the church with unique mosaics was carried out. Let's talk about other compatriots who found refuge in Serbia. I will tell you about personalities who have left a significant mark here and had a huge influence on architecture and art.
Royal Winery
You will visit the royal winery, where an archive of the region's oldest wines is stored. Learn about the history of wines from royal vineyards, which were served at the table during official visits of heads of state and were a source of pride for the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Together, we will see unusual wedding gifts of the royal couple and try to decipher the inscriptions on the oldest wine barrel.
Secrets of Modern Winemakers
To conclude the trip, you will visit the largest modern winery in the region. Learn about the history of private winemakers and how they revived the winemaking traditions of the Shumadia region in the turbulent '90s. We will walk through the wine cellars, see how champagne is produced using classic technology, and meet an ancient god of winemaking guarding this family's wine archive.
