About this experience
Just steps away from the Vatican, on the banks of the Tiber River, lies not just a castle, but a majestic structure whose history intertwines events of two millennia. On this individual tour, I will guide you through the corners of the former residence of the Roman popes and reveal the hidden secrets of Castel Sant'Angelo: its powerful owners, famous prisoners, failed escapes, secret passages, papal treasures, and mysterious visitors.
What to Expect
Kaleidoscope of eras of Castel Sant'Angelo
As we walk through the terraces, halls, and dungeons, you will hear captivating stories that have taken place within the walls of Castel Sant'Angelo over the past thousand years. I will tell you about the times when an ancient emperor built a grand structure on the banks of the Tiber. I will narrate stories of the Middle Ages with sieges, knightly tournaments, and fierce struggles for the papal throne: it was during this time in Rome that an unprecedented event occurred - the Pope became a mother! The secrets of the dungeons and the delicate grotesque frescoes will immerse you in the Renaissance era and the times of the Inquisition. Afterwards, we will discuss the life of the castle in the 20th century and try to find Art Deco-style frescoes.
Medieval nooks and secret passages
We will walk around the castle, peek into the chambers of medieval guards, and observe weapons and armor with traces of battles. With special permission and wearing a helmet, you will descend into the closed casemates and storerooms for supplies for a 'rainy day,' walk through a secret passage between the castle and the Vatican, along which popes have escaped. From the dungeons, you will ascend to the upper terraces and admire the incredible views of the Eternal City, as well as examine the frescoes in the papal chambers created by talented students of Raphael, artists Perin del Vaga, and Giovanni da Udine.

However, Nellie handled everything in a highly professional manner, she still ...

A very interesting tour. Nelli told a lot about the history of Castel Sant'Angelo. A unique presentation of the material, yet simple and light at the same time. The underground part of the castle was closed during our visit, so Nelli gave us a discount, but the tour still covered the full extent. I ...
