About this experience
The Castle of the Holy Angel has served as an imperial mausoleum, protection against barbarians, a papal residence, and even a prison where Giordano Bruno languished for many years. We will walk through all levels of the castle, delve into its history, peek into the papal apartments and the Treasure Hall, and then enjoy the magnificent panorama of Rome from the Terrace of the Castle of the Holy Angel.
What to Expect
History of the legendary castle
Our walk will begin with the beautiful Saint Angel Bridge and the surrounding legends. Then we will enter the Castle of the Holy Angel and trace its path from the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian to the papal residence and museum. Exploring all six levels of the castle, you will learn how the castle survived the raids of the Visigoths, in honor of which angel it is named, and which famous prisoners languished in its dungeons.
Papal apartments
We will visit the stunning papal apartments decorated with frescoes from the 15th-16th centuries. I will introduce you to interesting details of the interiors and tell you how the Roman popes lived in the castle, how they decorated their rooms, and spent their leisure time. We will also visit the unusual rooms of the castle: the Hall of Justice, the Treasure Hall, and the Secret Archive.
See Rome from above
Climbing to the sixth level, the Terrace of the Castle of the Holy Angel, you will see the majestic panorama of the Eternal City. The breathtaking view of the Tiber and St. Peter's Basilica is truly awe-inspiring! And of course, here you can not only admire Rome but also take unique photos!

About 7 years ago we visited the castle on our own, but we really wanted a guided tour. Luckily, we met Julia and her tour. We are very grateful to Julia for the wonderful tour and time spent. I recommend it to everyone, instead of wandering on your own, there is so much new and interesting to learn...
