About this experience
Between our walk and the visit of Vereshchagin in Samarkand, more than 150 years have passed - but what is 150 years for a city as ancient as eternity itself? You will follow in the footsteps of the great painter in Samarkand: see how the city's monuments and its everyday life have changed, touch the history of the legendary Tamerlane, and hear the breath of centuries in the Shahi-Zinda complex.
What to Expect
Exploring the History of Samarkand Through Vereshchagin's Paintings
In the mid-19th century, the Russian artist V.V. Vereshchagin visited Samarkand: the famous 'Turkestan Series' was the result, many of which are exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery. Vereshchagin captured not only the architectural monuments, but also the way of life of that period. By examining 'Triumphant Entry', 'Bacha with his Followers', and other works, we will delve into the history and customs of 19th century Samarkand.
Key Places of the City: 100 Years Ago and Today
It has been a long time since Vereshchagin's visit, but one thing remains unchanged - Samarkand still leaves an indelible impression on its guests. To convince yourself of this, we will walk in the artist's footsteps and visit the points from which he depicted the main monuments of Samarkand. The program includes:
- Samarkand Boulevard, which divided the Russian and Uzbek parts of the city. Here, historical Russian buildings from the 19th century such as a bank and gymnasium are preserved.
- Gur-Emir Mausoleum, where the tomb of the legendary Amir Timur is located. We will not only see the perspective from which Vereshchagin painted this structure, but also touch upon the history of Tamerlane himself.
- Registan Square, where the events of the painting 'Triumphant Entry' unfold. Thanks to the details of the canvas, we will be transported to the day when Russian troops entered Samarkand, and a town crier announced on the market square.
- Shahi-Zinda - a unique complex of mausoleums, one of the most beautiful places in Samarkand. You will see Tamerlane's gates and learn who had the honor of being buried in this complex.
- Siab Bazaar: just like a hundred years ago, Eastern trade bustles here today. You can try everything and bargain everywhere! Next to the bazaar, we will see the Bibi-Khanym Mosque: we will also discuss it, as Vereshchagin did not ignore it either.
