About this experience
Why was Samarkand called the 'Southern Petersburg'? On the tour, you will find the answer to this question. By completing my tasks and solving riddles, you will discover the city in a new light and be inspired by its harmony. You will also be transported back to the era of the Russian Empire, stroll through the historical part and modern center, and visit off-the-beaten-path locations.
What to Expect
Despite its Eastern flair, Samarkand has preserved its Russian soul and rich culture of the Russian Empire. Before the quest begins, I will provide you with a map to help you complete the tasks, as well as clues in the form of retro photographs from different eras. Ahead lies a soulful walk-play, where I, the main character, will reveal the city to you from a new perspective. So, the program includes:
- Russo-Chinese Bank, opened in 1895. The two-story mansion became one of the city's most beautiful structures reflecting elements of classical architecture.
- Abramovsky Boulevard, which will soon celebrate its 150th anniversary. Although it is no longer officially named as such, this name is still in use among the residents of Samarkand. Why has it remained so 'alive', and who was Abramov in reality? Find out on the tour!
- Military Assembly building. Grand balls and masquerades were held in the large rectangular hall, where our grandparents danced the waltz and mazurka. This building is one of the oldest in the city. I will tell you its amazing history.
- Governor's Residence. Samarkand seems to be the only city in Central Asia where the administration resides in a pre-revolutionary Russian building.
- 'Beheaded Church', founded in 1868 in the citadel. How did it happen that the church ended up 'beheaded'? You will find out during the quest.
- Church Alley. With the help of the map, you will have to find 3 churches, each completely different from the others.
- Old Library. This building was the cultural center of Russian Samarkand. It is now being used as intended. But the most interesting thing is inside. You will have to guess what exactly the walls of this reading room hide.
- Lenin Street. The central street of the city will be the cherry on top. Here, stories and legends await you at every corner!
