About this experience
In the main cathedral of Latvia, you will see artifacts from past times and hear one of the best organs in Europe. I will tell you about the history of the city, the creation and destruction of the sanctuary, its unique style, the golden rooster, and the Catholic monastery. During the tour, you will learn to distinguish the coats of arms of notable townspeople from nobles and delve into the mystical legends of the cathedral.
What to expect
"Cathedral with a rooster on the spire"
In the walls of the cathedral, eight centuries are enclosed. In one place, you will see architectural styles from different eras: from Romanesque to modern, appreciate the amazing decoration, stained glass windows depicting events of bygone years, and other works of art. I will help you understand the heraldry and symbolism of the ancient temple and guide you through its fate. Before you unfolds a cultural and historical detective story: eminent noble families, fires, secret treasures and dungeons, keys to which are hidden in the Vatican. You will learn whose ashes rest "under the third stone, under the lamp", uncover the secrets of the rooster and the steps leading down.
"King of Instruments"
In the cathedral hall, organ music concerts are held. Some of the organ pipes are made of an alloy of lead and tin, others are made of pear, apple, maple, oak, and pine, thanks to which the instrument can convey not only musical compositions but also the sound of sea waves, wind, and even the human voice. We will examine the exquisite facade, the central part of which has preserved the decor of the late 16th-century instrument, and decorative carvings in the style of early Baroque, and then we will hear the voice of Riga's legendary singer, works for whom were composed by such composers as Franz Liszt and Max Reger.
