About this experience
The Dome Cathedral is the oldest sacred building in Riga. It is the heart of the Old Town. You will uncover its 800-year history, decipher the architectural features, admire the stained glass windows, and see the famous organ. Although the Dome Square is not as ancient as the cathedral, it also deserves a separate story! You will learn facts, legends, and curious stories associated with it.
What to expect
On the Dome Square, I will tell you:
- Why the golden roosters of Old Riga always face the same direction
- How merchants planned their workday around them
- How Triton transformed into Dionysus
- Whose bell tolls for the Unfortunate Sinners
- Why Princess Kristina was beheaded
And in the ancient Dome Cathedral, you will discover:
- What a mouse does in it and how it got there
- How the ancient cathedral builder won a dispute against his colleagues
- Why the Vatican is trying to infiltrate the dungeons of the Cathedral church
- What Peter I and the Red Cardinal's ghost are doing in the cathedral
- Why people dressed in black used to visit the church bell ringer at night
