What to Expect
Riga's Medieval Heritage
Our acquaintance with Riga will begin with the ancient Town Hall Square and its surrounding architectural ensemble. Then we will turn onto the narrowest street in the city, pass by the only preserved fortress gates - the Swedish Gates, walk past the Powder Tower, and talk about what once happened behind its walls. You will see the famous 'Three Brothers' and the 14th-century castle, and along the way, count the roosters on the spires of Riga's cathedrals and learn how this bird became the city's symbol. Without wetting your feet, you will ford the River Daugava, descend into the 13th-century dungeons, and walk through their tunnels and labyrinths, discovering fascinating stories at every step.
Riga's History in Local Legends and Beliefs
The streets of Riga hold more than a dozen amazing plots that will come alive on our walk. You will learn where the Brotherhood of the Blackheads originated in the city and hear its legends, discover the history of the world's first Christmas tree and peek into a real alchemist's laboratory to find golden ingots and ingredients for the elixir of eternal youth. We will not forget to rub the magical bowl from the 18th century, dream of secrets at the Lantern of Happiness, and greet the Bremen Town Musicians. You will also find out where the Riga executioner lived, why you won't find a single magpie in the city, and who the notorious Muris and Kuzya are.
Additionally, along the way, I will give you some practical tips for independent walks around Riga and, if you wish, take a few photos for memory.
