About this experience
This excursion will immerse you in the atmosphere of elegant Ragusa - the most unusual city in Sicily, which has merged two historical centers. You will unravel the intricacies of Ragusa's history, admire examples of late Sicilian Baroque, discover the city's secrets, and taste local 'wine ice cream'.
What to Expect
One Ragusa and Two Cities
Ragusa is interesting because it is the only city in Sicily that survived a centuries-long 'battle' of Patron Saints and divided into two historical centers several centuries ago - we will explore both. You will learn the secrets of this city's structure, see two main squares of Ragusa, two cathedral cathedrals, two municipalities, and even two railway stations. You will also enjoy luxurious panoramic views of the city, stroll up and down the steps of winding picturesque streets, admire majestic churches, and taste local 'wine ice cream' at a famous Ragusa café.
What Ancient Facades Will Tell
I will reveal the secrets of Ragusa hidden behind the walls of the magnificent palaces of the local nobility. You will find out why the city was not rebuilt after the earthquake at its original location, how aristocrats deceived the locals in the mid-19th century, and what made Ragusa famous among Mediterranean cuisine enthusiasts. We will delve into the nuances of local architecture: I will explain how to distinguish late Sicilian Baroque from classical Baroque, what 'asphalt stone' is, and what the figures on splendid baroque balconies can tell. And then we will return to the present day and discuss why Ragusa is considered one of the most prosperous cities in southern Italy (but this is a secret that I will whisper).
