About this experience
I invite you to a tour in the exceptionally beautiful medieval town-jewel Erice and in the ancient city, known by the mysterious people Elimi, - Segesta. You will enjoy the amazing atmosphere of antiquity, picturesque views, local products, and preserved monuments of past eras, through which you can appreciate the talent and capabilities of ancient architects.
What to expect
Erice
First settlement here, on a plateau rising 750 m above sea level, was founded back in the 5th century BC, but only monuments of the Middle Ages have survived to this day: Norman, Romanesque, and Gothic. The city has many churches and two castles: Pepoli Castle and Venus Castle, built on the site of the ancient temple of Venus. From the observation platform of Pepoli Castle - or as it is also called 'Castello del Balio' - one of the most picturesque views in all of Sicily opens up: on the sea, the Egadi Islands, and the city of Trapani below. But still the most important thing in Erice is the city itself, its amazing atmosphere, because the residents have preserved it as it was 700 years ago. You will not just walk through the narrow streets of the old city, but you will take a whole journey through time!
Erice is located on a high mountain and can be reached by car or by cable car (which is much more interesting!). Going up on the funicular, from a bird's eye view you can take excellent photos. Also in the city, we will be met with a free tasting of Italian D.O.C wines and world-famous pastries.
Segesta
Another journey back in time that we are about to make. Have you ever heard of the mysterious people Elimi? Just during the times of Greek colonization in the 5th-7th centuries BC in Sicily, this people lived. The ancient city has been well preserved: our eyes will see a temple built in the Doric style, an amphitheater for public entertainment, and other attributes of the ancient urban area. All together, this will give us the opportunity to appreciate the abilities of architects and builders of ancient civilizations.
Trapani
The third stop on our journey will be the city of Trapani, which is worth not passing by. What can be recommended to visit in Trapani, the 'city of wind'? Of course, 'Saline', ancient windmills where salt is made, - this is exactly the place where salt is made, and here is the Salt Museum. If you are lucky, you can take home as a souvenir one of the large salt crystals found on your own.
Organizational details
- For the excursion, it is desirable to have a car. If you prefer to move around in your (rented) car, we can meet at the agreed place where the tour will begin, drive through Erice, Segesta, and Trapani, and then return to the meeting place. Or I can help organize a transfer: from where you are staying in Sicily. In addition, there is public transport (train, bus, cable car) between all cities, which we can use.
- Entrance tickets to museums, temples, and the archaeological area of Segesta are not included in the tour price and are paid separately
