About this experience
You will see the famous Roman amphitheater, uncover the mysteries of the ancient city, and walk through the cozy Old Town of the island of Ortigia. I will tell you which spectacles the Romans loved more than gladiatorial battles, why the Greeks invented their theater, and show the place where lovers' wishes come true.
What to Expect
The soul of Syracuse in the dazzling mirrors of Archimedes
Syracuse resembles Archimedes's golden crown, the outer splendor of which conceals its true mystery. The real inner beauty of Syracuse lies in the heart of its history, allowing you to feel and understand how Christianity and paganism, secular and ecclesiastical, faith and magic intertwine in Sicilian traditions. The first part of the tour is dedicated to Syracuse's most famous attraction - the Neapolis Archaeological Park. As you wander through it, you will see:
- "Paradise" quarries with the cave of "Dionysius Ear" - you will learn what secrets the ancient city has been guarding for centuries in quarries with the strange name "Paradise" and what is famous about the cave "Dionysius Ear" and the tyrant who built it.
- Greek Theater from the 5th century BC - I will tell you why the Greeks invented their theater and how it is perfected today. And also, who of the philosophers sat on the ancient steps and what is the fate of the theater today.
- Hieron's Altar, the ruins of which will tell about grand pagan festivities.
- Roman amphitheater - you will see what remains of the monumental Roman amphitheater and understand which spectacles the Romans loved more than gladiatorial battles.
- Presumed tomb of Archimedes - here I will tell you how Archimedes thwarted the plans of the Roman consul and ultimately perished.
Walk through the ancient island of Ortigia
You will walk through the historic center of the picturesque island of Ortigia, which is connected to Sicily by two bridges. In ancient times, Ortigia was an important defensive fortress, and now it is known as a beautiful and very cozy place for inspiring walks. The tour program includes:
- Temple of Apollo - you will learn how its ruins have received a "second life" and what the "window to history" cut by the Spaniards in its wall says.
- Cathedral Square - I will reveal the secret of why and when hundreds of doves are released into Cathedral Square and why the "Senate Cart," participating in city celebrations, is not liked by the locals.
- Cathedral of St. Lucy - it is here that the famous Caravaggio painting "Burial of St. Lucy" is exhibited.
- Fountain of Arethusa - I will tell you what connects Syracuse with Greek Corinth and where lovers' wishes come true.
