About this experience
The Princes Islands are rightfully called the pearls of Istanbul: no cars, but plenty of historical sites, beaches, and clean air. Explore this oasis with a new perspective of the multifaceted city: ride a bike through the streets of Buyukada, witness the tranquil life of the islanders, and discover the secrets hidden within Greek churches and Ottoman mansions.
What to Expect
Exploring the Island by Bike and on Foot
From Istanbul, take a ferry to Buyukada where we will meet. After introductions and coffee (or breakfast), we will wander through the quiet streets of the center, passing colorful cafe windows. Then we will grab our bikes and set off. We will ride past the splendid Splendid Hotel, visit the remains of Leon Trotsky's house, and see wonderful summer mansions in the Art Nouveau style. Then, biking through a forest path, we will climb to the top of Isa Tepesi Hill, where an unforgettable view of the cape, open sea, and neighboring islands awaits us.
We will visit the Tas Mektebi gallery, and then head to the largest historic wooden building in Europe - the Greek school-shelter Prinkipo. We will see Lunapark Square, hike up the hill to visit the Orthodox Church of Saint George (Agia Yorgi), and enjoy the panoramic view from Istanbul to Mount Uludag. You will feel like you are in the center of the Sea of Marmara!
Next, we will circle the second half of the island and, if you desire, have a snack at a Greek fish restaurant overlooking the cliffs.
On our way back, we will pass by the house of the writer of the novel 'The Songbird' Resat Nuri Guntekin, and stop by the Illuminati House (the mansion of the famous Sabunjakis).
Traveling Back in Time
If time allows, we will visit other islands - Heybeliada, Burgazada, and Kinaliada. We will stop at Burgazada, where we will visit the Church of Agia Ioannis and the house-museum of the poet Sait Faik Abasyankak. If desired and weather permitting, you can swim at one of the island's beaches.
Throughout the journey, I will share legends and stories about the local antique mansions and Greek Orthodox churches. You will learn why the islands are called the Princes and how Greeks, Turks, Armenians, and Jews peacefully coexist in one place. You will also taste delicious fish dishes and baklava from the Greek cuisine.
