About this experience
Italians say that those who visit Pienza will be "a bocca aperta" (with open mouth). I'll let you in on a secret, this is quite likely, but it's better to see for yourself, right? You will discover the history and architecture of the town, where the ideals of the Renaissance were best manifested. And along the way, you will visit the most recognizable and beautiful place in Tuscany.
What Awaits You
The Most Photogenic Place in Val d'Orcia Valley
On the way to Pienza, I will take you to an incredibly picturesque spot with the Chapel of Madonna di Vitaleta. Buses don't go there, and trains don't run there, it's not easy to reach without knowing the local roads, yet this is the most photographed place in the entire valley. You will be able to capture the extraordinary harmony of rural landscape and a lonely little church.
The Magical Atmosphere of Pienza
The city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the Val d'Orcia Valley itself, in the heart of which it is located. Strolling among flower-filled streets, authentic shops, majestic palaces, graceful castles, and towers, you will understand why Pienza has become a favorite place of many renowned directors. The great Zeffirelli filmed scenes from "Romeo and Juliet" here, and Anthony Minghella - "The English Patient".
A Simple Village Turned 'Ideal Town'
You will walk along the Streets of Happiness, Luck, Love, and Kisses, visit the viewing terraces offering amazing views of the city with endless bright green hills. And on the main square Piazza Pio II, a jewel of Renaissance urban planning, you will see Palazzo Borgia, Piccolomini, the Communal Palace, and the cathedral. Using these landmarks as examples, I will tell you how in the 15th century a neglected village was transformed into a city, one that best approached the ideals of the Renaissance. What principles formed the basis of creating this dream city, what made its layout interesting, and what were considered exemplary approaches to organizing harmonious spaces.
A Small Cheese Kingdom
Pienza is famous not only for its centuries-old history and beauty, but it is also a paradise for gourmets and cheese lovers, as the most famous type of pecorino cheese in Tuscany is produced here. In local shops, you can taste this delicacy along with unparalleled Tuscan wines. And, of course, I will help you not get lost among the variety of souvenirs that adorn the craftsmen's shops.
