About this experience
Palazzo Vecchio was built in the 13th century for the Florentine government. As a center of power, the palace served various functions: it was both a city hall and the residence of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. On the tour, I will tell you about the architecture of the building, the decor of its magnificent halls, and the great masters of the Renaissance who worked here. You will also hear the history of the town hall and understand its role in Italy's past.
What to expect
- Learn what was on the Piazza della Signoria before Palazzo Vecchio was built.
- Discover the history of the strange 95-meter tower and find out who was imprisoned there.
- Explore the magnificent Hall of Five Hundred, which was once intended to be painted by two giants of the Italian Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
- You will also appreciate the decoration of the Hall of Audiences and the Hall of Lilies.
- We will visit the room where the ruling Medici dynasty kept their most valuable possessions. Today you will see geographical maps and the famous globe here.
- In the Chapel of the Priests, I will tell you about the life of Florentine parliamentarians.
- Additionally, I will show you Dante Alighieri's death mask, the studio of Francesco I de' Medici, connected to the secret rooms of the palace, and the office of Niccolò Machiavelli.
