What to Expect
Historical Corners of the City
We will start the walk from the square and the Cathedral of St. Anna - the main cultural heritage of the Canary Islands! Along the way, you will learn about the first Canarian aborigines, the conquest of the island, famous sailors and pirates, the activities, and the life of local residents. You will get acquainted with traditional Canarian architecture on Doctor Chil Street. You will find out why the houses on the main street are painted in different colors and what the legendary city tram has to do with it.
Christopher Columbus' Heritage
A key figure in the history of Las Palmas can certainly be called Christopher Columbus, so we will pay special attention to the legendary explorer. In Pilar Nuevo Square, you will see the Columbus House Museum, where traditional Canarian style combines with Gothic elements in architecture. I will tell you what Columbus did on the island of Gran Canaria, share some interesting stories about the explorer, and show a 15th-century chapel where he prayed before expeditions to new lands.
Gastronomic Traditions of Las Palmas
Then we will definitely visit the oldest market in the Atlantic, Mercado de Vegueta, where you can try and buy local fruits, fish, meat, and much more. I will tell you about the history of the market and local cuisine, and then guide you through the former trading street Mendizabal with plenty of restaurants, gastro-bars, and cafes. Every Thursday, there is a 'tapas night' on the street, where in every bar for 3-4 euros, you can try local tapas and a pint of beer.
Old Confectionery in the Bohemian Quarter of Triana
During the walk to the fashionable Triana quarter, you will learn how the district of poor fishermen turned into the most bohemian place in Las Palmas. We will explore the literary cabinet, get closer to the Benito Perez Galdos Theater, listen to street musicians. And at the end of the walk, we will definitely stop for a couple of minutes at the oldest confectionery in Las Palmas, where you can try amazing pastries and ice cream!
