I will tell you about the surviving monuments - the fortress of San Miguel and the monastery of Santo Domingo. Sights of a City Reborn from Ashes
Garachico was almost destroyed as a result of a volcanic eruption in the early 18th century. The walk will start from a viewpoint where you will see the traces of the descending lava. I will tell you about the challenging fate of the once wealthiest port of Tenerife and the 'Füegos del Risco' event, held in memory of the disaster every five years. Next, you will visit the surviving fortress of San Miguel, where we will discuss the important defensive structure against pirate and corsair attacks. And one of the ancient monasteries of Tenerife - Santo Domingo, also untouched by the lava flow. You will also hear about the nature of the El Caletón lava baths and learn which other natural pools are worth visiting in Tenerife.
Canarian Cigars and Insights into Local Life
At a renowned cigar store, you will delve into the history of a successful Canarian torcedor. And a little earlier, you will encounter the Emigrant Monument, where we will discuss the emigration of Canarians to Latin America. I will guide you through the colorful streets and hidden courtyards of Garachico, sharing insights on the local cuisine, education, festivals, family, and Canarian habits along the way. I will also provide valuable tips: where to try the best signature dishes, where to go in your free time, and which stores offer the best deals on Tenerife souvenirs.
If you wish, we will also climb a long staircase with a hundred steps to the beautiful snow-white bell tower of Saint Anna.
