About this experience
The style known as Art Nouveau in France, Secession in Austria, and Jugendstil in Germany had a significant impact on European architecture at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Munich's architecture is a vivid manifestation of this style! Let's get to know the Jugendstil of the Bavarian capital.
About Modernism
Jugendstil was widespread and highly popular in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. Architects began using materials like glass, steel, and concrete. Their designs manifested through the creation of curved lines inspired by the sinuous forms of natural motifs. In Germany, this period saw the flourishing of Gründerzeit, where rapidly earned money was invested not only in profitable houses but in an entirely new type of buildings. The architecture of these structures preserved old traditions but also introduced contemporary influences - wealth, luxury, and brilliance were prominently displayed, setting them apart favorably from the buildings of the recent past.
Program
During the two-hour excursion through the historic district of Schwabing, where famous writers Lion Feuchtwanger, Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, and the leader of the world proletariat Vladimir Lenin traditionally lived, we will explore the best examples of buildings constructed in the Modernist style.
