About this experience
Without bridges, New York would not have been a truly unified metropolis, so they deserve special attention from travelers. There are about 2000 of them here, but we will focus on four - Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, and Queensboro. We will cross the East River on them and talk about their features and secrets.
What to expect
By profession, I am a transportation planner, so I can tell you a lot about the city's transportation network. Our walk will cover all four bridges in order, from south to north. The southernmost and most famous and oldest of them - the Brooklyn Bridge, so we will start with it. I will tell you in detail about the history of each structure and interesting facts related to them. We will also visit a point from which all the bridges are visible at the same time.
You will learn:
- how a woman without an engineering education managed to complete the construction of a bridge;
- what sets the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges apart from other bridges of similar construction;
- how New Yorkers moved between Brooklyn and Manhattan before the bridges and subway appeared;
- what was the peculiarity of the Brooklyn Bridge in the first years of its existence;
- what the Queensboro Bridge was famous for in the first half of the last century.
And at the end of the tour, a little surprise awaits you, about which not a word for now.
