About this experience
The Asian part of Istanbul often remains undeservedly neglected by travelers, yet it is the perfect place for those who love to explore the city away from tourist paths and discover it from unexpected angles. We will stroll through the youthful neighborhoods of the city amidst yacht clubs, antique shops, graffiti, cafes, and eastern markets, talk about Turkish rock music, and take a ride on a small tram. You will see that Istanbul is not only Byzantium or the Ottoman Empire but also a lively modern metropolis filled with creativity, atmospheric details, and endless movement.
What to expect
Asian Istanbul: immersion in contrasts
We will explore the city through one of its most secular, fashionable, and contrasting neighborhoods. Here, the traditions of classical Istanbul, its secular life, and modern trends go hand in hand. You will see yacht clubs next to ancient Christian churches, hear stories about old mansions, visit antique and second-hand bookshops, and along the way, become acquainted with Istanbul street art - graffiti hidden in alleys like treasures, so each find will be a surprise. Then we will head to the market, where you will feel the stunning eastern flair and intoxicating aromas of spices, sweets, and Turkish coffee. And if we're lucky, we might even take a ride on the baby tram, the younger brother of the legendary retro tram from Istiklal Street.
Everyday life of the city here and now
Step by step, you will immerse yourself in the everyday, dynamic, and unique life of Istanbul. We will visit neighborhoods where Turkish youth spend their time - in bars, hipster cafes, and traditional tea gardens. I will tell you where Turkish rock music, called 'Anatolian rock,' originated and show you the place where its founder lived and died. You will also learn why there are so many Turkish meyhanes (traditional taverns) next to the fish market, where Istanbulites come to have a glass of raki and talk about life.
