About this experience
Historically, the world of Western Istanbul is incredibly colorful and rich, but my main task is to convey the special atmosphere that has been evolving here for centuries thanks to dozens of different peoples. You will not only see postcard facades and encounter a red tram, but also explore secret courtyards and alleys, where fragments of the city's multicultural life will unfold before you.
What to Expect
The quarters of big Beyoglu
I will take you through the ancient districts of 'Europe in miniature', built back in the Byzantine times: Galata, Cihangir, Karakoy, and Cukurcuma. You will hear the romantic legend of the Galata Tower. Discover how different faiths' temples coexisted here - mosques, Catholic cathedrals, Orthodox churches, and synagogues. You will also learn about the famous Flower Passage, tied to the history of the early waves of Russian emigrants.
Istiklal Courtyards
You will walk along the street without which Istanbul cannot be imagined. But I will draw your attention not to the colorful facades of shops and galleries, authentic pedestrian chaos, and historic tram, but to the courtyards where you can only listen to the heartbeat of the famous Istanbul promenade. You will find out what happened here in the early 20th century and how it was tied to the white emigration, where to find inconspicuous but eloquent architectural details of past eras and various national traditions. You will also find out what events are held precisely here and why many art studios prefer to be located on the colorful Istiklal.
🌁 ☕ Finally, you will admire the Bosphorus Strait and the famous bridge connecting the European and Asian parts of Istanbul. You will see a beautiful mosque and discover a local market. After the walk, I suggest taking a break in a cafe and enjoying a cup of authentic Turkish coffee overlooking the Bosphorus Bridge.
