About this experience
Kargopol is one of the oldest trading cities of the Russian North. You will remember it for its white-stone ensembles of the Old Market and Cathedral squares, idyllic panoramas of Lake Onega, and merchant houses. I will tell you how Kargopol was created and developed, what traditions it is famous for, and which famous people lived here.
What to Expect
Main squares and temples of the city
You will admire the magnificent architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square, the basis of which consists of ancient temples. I will show you the Christ Nativity Cathedral, the Vvedenskaya Church, the bell tower, and the Church of John the Baptist. I will reveal under what circumstances they were built and what events are associated with them. In addition, we will visit the Old Market Square, where you can explore the 18th-century Church of the Nativity of the Virgin with its iconostasis.
Kargopol in faces
Interesting objects of civil architecture are located around the perimeter of the squares. We will not overlook them either! You will see the Guest Yards, the trading stall of the merchant A. P. Lyokhov, and the mansion of A. A. Vishnyakov, where Alexander I stayed. I will share interesting facts about the owners of these buildings and other residents who left their mark on the city's history. For example, you will hear about Alexander Baranov — the ruler of Russian settlements in North America.
