About this experience
In the depths of the Ladoga skerries, on the shore of the Lyappyaarvi bay, lies the city of Sortavala. It changed its name three times, as it belonged to Sweden, Finland, and Russia at different times. With the help of archival photographs that I will bring with me, we will transport ourselves to its past. You will learn when the city began to develop actively and who gave it such a unique appearance.
What to Expect
Since the late 19th century, Sortavala began to develop actively: it was during this period that it became a center of trade, education, and industry. The best architects were invited to build new buildings - banks, schools, residential houses - which is why the city became so unusual. Strolling leisurely through the streets, we will explore the main attractions. You will see:
- The exquisite wooden building of the town hall
- The monumental and strikingly beautiful building of the Finnish bank
- The houses of Leander and the merchant Siitoneni, resembling medieval castles
You will also hear the wonderful music that sounds in the strings of the kantele of the Rune Singer.
Along the way, I will tell you about the amazing people who lived here and made a huge contribution to the development and appearance of the city: from the first mayor and benefactors to ordinary residents. I will supplement my story with a series of old photos.
