About this experience
Luxor seems like two different cities, unlike each other. The right bank ('City of the Living') is known for the Karnak and Luxor Temples. On the left bank ('City of the Dead') are ancient necropolises, the Colossi of Memnon, and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. You will visit all these places, compare the two parts of the city, and juxtapose modern life with life thousands of years ago.
What to expect
City of the Living
First, we will head to the 'City of the Living'. This is the real Egypt with an eastern flavor. Here you will find residential quarters with modern amenities alongside remnants of the distant past. You will discover a non-touristy Egypt: witness how locals build houses, fetch water, and spend their free time.
Karnak Temple
Also located in the 'City of the Living' is one of the largest ancient structures - the Karnak Temple. It was built during the reign of 30 pharaohs! You will see sphinx statues with lion bodies and ram heads, the world's largest hypostyle hall with 144 columns, a huge granite scarab beetle, and a sacred lake.
City of the Dead
Next, we will cross over to the other side of the Nile - the 'City of the Dead'. Following ancient traditions, locals rarely settle in these areas. The entire area is filled with ruins and mortuary temples. You will see the following historical monuments:
- Valley of the Kings with the tomb of Amenhotep III: a grand necropolis where archaeological excavations are still ongoing.
- Colossi of Memnon: two huge statues standing 18 meters tall and weighing over 700 tons each.
- Temple of Queen Hatshepsut: a majestic structure at the base of sheer cliffs.
- Valley of the Nobles: around 70 tombs amidst bare rocks. Here lie the wives and children of pharaohs, as well as nobles (hence the name).
