About this experience
Lisbon is as old as Rome, and like any city with a centuries-old history, it is located on 7 hills. We invite you to look at the heart of Portugal from the 7 best viewpoints, drive through the most beautiful streets, and discover the most interesting neighborhoods. Lisbon will share its color, atmosphere, unusual facts, and, of course, breathtaking views with you!
What awaits you
Old Lisbon
The journey begins with the oldest districts of the city - Graça and Alfama, where you will enjoy bright quarters from the viewpoints Nossa Senhora do Monte, Portas do Sol and Santa Graça. You will learn about the first settlement of the Phoenicians in the blessed bay of Alis Ubbo, from where the name Lisbon came, about the Greeks and Romans on these lands.
Medieval alleys
We will drive through the territory of the triangle where medieval Lisbon was located - from the fortress of Saint George to the Tagus waterfront: you will learn about the centuries-old Arab rule and the knights-crusaders who helped the first king of Portugal reconquer his lands. Leaving the labyrinth of medieval alleys, through a series of squares - Martim Moniz, Figueira, Rossio, Restauradores - you will reach Liberty Avenue, to the Pombal square and Edward VII Park.
After the earthquake
In Edward VII Park, the largest in the city, from the viewpoint you will see how Lisbon grew and changed. You will hear how it became a new city after one of the most devastating earthquakes in Europe, how this tragedy affected the entire history of Portugal when its golden age ended. Here you will see a monument to one of the main heroes of all subsequent events, Marquis of Pombal.
High district, wide streets
The next point of the self-drive tour is the 'high' district of Bairro Alto, where from the viewpoint São Pedro de Alcântara you will overlook the magnificent districts of Alfama, Mouraria, Baixa and the outskirts of Lisbon, which have become very prestigious places to live. You will drive along very wide streets by 18th-century standards and along the waterfront, where you will enjoy the view of the river.
Capital of the Great Geographic Discoveries
In the Belém area, you will get acquainted with the history of this place, directly related to the era of the Great Geographic Discoveries. Here, from the square at the Discoveries Monument, you will see the UNESCO World Heritage sites - the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower.
Echoes of America and Brazil
Crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge (the twin of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco), you will cross the Tagus River and find yourself in the city of Almada, where the Christ statue is located (a replica of the symbol of Rio de Janeiro), from the viewpoint of which (pedestal height 82 meters!) you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Lisbon, the Tagus River, and the entire Lisbon Riviera.
